A Short Report to the Council & Membership on November’s Activities
Freeze Up:
The Director took personal leave the first two weeks of November to bring his son trapping around Napaimute – one of the many traditional activities that take place during this time of the year. It was a very enjoyable time for both and they hope the tradition continues in future years. Thanks to the Council for granting the leave request.
This year’s freeze up was more like an average year. For the written record, the ice stopped at Napaimute on the evening of November 5th. We were able to cross the river on foot November 7th and by snow machine the next day.
As in years past, we continue to provide freeze up/break up information, as well as monthly ice thicknesses at Napaimute to the National Weather Service River Forecast Center.
Getting Back to Normal:
The little bit of November that was left before the long Thanksgiving weekend was spent catching back up in the office.
This included preparing for our November Traditional Council Meeting, our annual newsletter, close out reporting on two grants, preliminary work on our 2010 budgets, and overall general duties.
Firewood Report:
All of Napaimute’s Firewood Packages were sold by mid-November. This was less than 6 weeks after they were brought down to Bethel. A good start, to what will hopefully become a long-term venture for our organization.
K300 Update:
On the evening of November 23rd, representatives of Napaimute met with the K300 Board of Director’s to begin working out some of the details of the Race coming to our community.
One of the key points brought forth by the Board was that due to the additional expense, Napaimute will not be an “Official” check point this year. If it were, there would be the extra cost of dropping off dog mushing supplies prior to the race and picking up dropped dogs afterwards. This is understandable, but we assured the Board that Napaimute would still act like an Official Check point.
We also expressed our thanks for the decision to bring the race to Napaimute and that we would all be working hard to make it enjoyable for everyone involved.
We will schedule a meeting with Napaimute’s people before Christmas to see who is going to be there for the race and what each can do to help out.
That’s it for November.
Thanks.
